Stunning Coast

Friday, July 17th

Cast off from Riviere Renard at 0615 leaving behind memories of a delicious homecoked meal which we heated up on the dock with the borrowed gas stove. Spartan but sustaining. We had the opportunity to share conversations with a few people at the marina. Some on their way to Iles de la Magdelene and others sailing south east like us. We particularly enjoyed talking to David, Caroline and their children Lucy and Tom. They are cruising from Brockville to Cape Breton in a spacioua yawl (much more comfortable than Kinneret). We couldn't help but recognize the valued experience that cruising by boat can provide for great kids.

Our day's travel was very enjoyable despite the overcast skies and intermittent rain. The beauty of the coastline is hard to express. Long stretches grassy shore then rocky cliffs then the flat water of a calm day with mountains in the distance. All this while watching whales, porpoises, seals and the bird show. Strings of gannets skimming the smooth surface at times rising up to dive straight into the water like falling darts in an effort to grab a meal. The sight of Perce Rock and Bonaventure Island hits you when you round the corner and gives you a large target to steer to, even though the GPS tells you that Perce is still 20 miles away. We tied to the Perce pier for a couple of hours trying to focus on the natural beauty of the area while ignoring the Niagara Falls style tourism that has grown wildly since my last trip here some 37 years ago. It was then time to cast off for L'anse au Beaufils marina for the night. We were pleased to see David, Caroline and family pull in a little later and more pleased to have been invited to have dinner with them on board their boat "Calamity". Great meal, great company and the rhum and wine were nice too!... Once again we were reminded that size matters. We have grown accustomed to and are not offended by the reality that no one will ever accept our reciprocal offers to come on board Kinneret for a granola bar and a cup of scotch. Sorry about pictures. we have a weak connection and the images won't load.

Perce Rock is quite impressive even if it does have a hole in it.
